My quest for the best burger in the City of Pittsburgh took me to Big Jim’s in the Run...

Check your fancy at the door, Big Jim's on the Run is the epitome of a casual blue collar every day Pittsburgher's watering hole. Very relaxed atmosphere, very friendly people, and very easy on the wallet, I was extremely content to start my Saturday afternoon with a six dollar "Gourmet Burger."

This place was recently featured on the food network, and it was clear that the staff was very excited to highlight their wedding soup and veal hoagie. But I am not in this for the glory, so I resisted the urge and ordered from the list of half-pound burgers.

I was extremely pleased with the presentation of this burger. The peppers and onions beautifully covered by perfectly melted American cheese. The burger was served slightly over cooked (I had ordered medium rare, and was served something a little closer to medium), but it did not draw too much from the overall burger experience. I was worried about the quality of the burger, as this much ground beef at this low of a price usually means high fat content and extra grease, but the taste of the burger was well balanced and consistently delicious. The basket of fries came with a side of gravy.... and there was much rejoicing. The largest drawback to this burger was the generic white bread, supermarket lowest common denominator bun, which added nothing to the experience.
