The upscale and modern atmosphere at Toast is inviting and warm, and the food and drink menu is an excellent example Contemporary-American fare. There is not much about Toast that I don’t like, ranking it amongst the best restaurants in Pittsburgh. The Thursday night $12 Burger-Bourbon-Beer special is without question the best in the city, and by the end of this particular fall evening, our bellies were full, and we had bourbon induced smiles on our faces, every member of our large dinner party was more than satisfied. What impresses me most about Toast is the restaurants ability to weave the comfortable yet classy atmosphere through every aspect of the dining experience. Start with the structure of an old Pittsburgh home, strip it down, create a lounge on the first floor, put the tables upstairs, refurbish the fireplace, dim the lights and create a warm comfortable environment; the quarters are tight, but that only lends to Toast’s intimacy. The design of the restaurant is casual and welcoming, and the lighting is perfect. As a party of fourteen, our service was excellent, our food was delicious, and everyone had a great time.
My burger at Toast consisted of Wagu Beef, a bit on the heavier side but dripping with flavor at every bite. It was cooked perfectly mid-rare, the consistency and the texture of the beef were excellent, complemented nicely by the mushrooms and the flawlessly toasted bun. The cheese was unremarkable, not doing much to add or subtract from the burger, and I believe the chips served to accompany the burger missed the mark. Room temperature, and tasting like a mix between sugar and Old Bay seasoning, these house chips added nothing to the burger experience, and probably would have been better left out entirely. Overall the burger was great, and the experience was wonderful, I cannot wait to return to Toast and to try some of the other delicious options on the menu.
