My quest for the best burger in the City of Pittsburgh took me to Tavern 245…
Tavern 245 is a clean and comfortable bar/restaurant with a modern casual, yet upscale feel and design. Just a stone’s throw away from Pittsburgh’s newly renaissanced Market Square, the downtown central business district lunch crowd really packs it in at 245. Most of the crowd appeared to be a young professional generation, and a cloud of boisterous conversation and laughter, coming from just about every table in the restaurant, provided the perfect atmosphere for a small group dynamic to thrive. This particular weekday, a Friday, the best of all weekdays, provided myself and two of my co-workers an opportunity to try one of the best and most complete burger experiences the City of Pittsburgh has to offer.
The ‘complete’ burger experience is really the key Tavern 245’s high score. In all of my burgering adventures, it has been very rare to come across a burger that does not have at least one glaring shortcoming. But the chef at Tavern 245 clearly took the time to make sure every aspect of his burger could hold it’s own. The beef, fresh and of good quality, was neither dry nor overly greasy; it had a fine consistent texture, and was cooked perfectly (medium rare in this particular case). The bun added greatly to the flavors and textures, not dry and flaky, but fresh and fluffy, it was noticeable, but not overpowering, and was a great medium for beef delivery. The Blue cheese was strong and delicious but did not overtake the burger, and the bacon was crispy and provided contrasting texture. I was extremely impressed with Tavern 245, and I cannot wait to make it back and try another burger!
