In February of 2015, my quest for the best burger in Pittsburgh brought me to the brand new Commoner Restaurant, the beautiful bar and restaurant is attached to the modern boutique Hotel Monico. The Hotel Monico is at the cutting edge of the modern Renaissance, taking place within Pittsburgh. The atmosphere at the Commoner is New Pittsburgh high-end casual – think wide open spaces, eclectic light fixtures, granite table tops, but still a comfortable feeling experience.
With the entire kitchen on display for patron entertainment and examination, the Commoner presents itself very well upon initial inspection. As a hotel restaurant, it is clear that customer service is a priority. However if you don’t have a reservation, you may find yourself unable to get a table, because this hip new Pittsburgh hot-spot is bursting at the seems with hungry foodies waiting for tables. Thankfully, the food, the service, my entire experience was as enjoyable as could be.
For lunch I ordered the Onion Soup Burger, an all beef patty topped with onion soup and Gruyere cheese aioli served on an onion bun. It was delicious. The burger was cooked perfectly -medium rare- as ordered; a crunchy char on the outside that created the perfect textural experience. The beef had great flavor and great consistency, not greasy and not dry, the Commoner burger is undoubtedly a contender for the best burger in the city.
I really cannot say enough positive things about the Commoner. I am lucky to live in a city where a culinary revolution is happening around me. This new restaurant is another waive in that movement. I’ve been back to the Commoner for a proper dinner since my burger tasting that opening week, and I highly recommend that you put this new restaurant on your radar.
