My quest for the best burger in the City of Pittsburgh took me to Tessaro’s…
Tessaro’s is a Pittsburgh Legend. It is touted around town as the best burger in the city. Rumor has it that they used to have a butcher shop included with the restaurant, and they would grind their beef freshly to make their burgers. Those days, however, have passed, and Tessaro’s is no longer a burger destination. The atmosphere is stuffy, the crowd is comprised mainly of tourists, and there is nothing genuine about having a meal at this one time classic Pittsburgh restaurant. After our meal at Tessaro’s, everyone at the table agreed on one thing; the food lacked flavor.
It is clear to me, that at one time, Tessaro’s had a great burger. Unfortunately those days are long gone. More than anything, this burger lacks flavor. It tasted like a bland hunk of low quality, unflavored beef. My burger was served with American cheese, and that cheese presented no flavor as well. The only flavors I was able to ascertain were the onion and mushrooms. The mushrooms and onions were delicious, sautéed in butter, but they do not make a burger. In addition, I was not impressed with the burger’s texture. Although served as ordered, medium rare, the meat’s texture felt almost whipped on the inside. I wonder if they meat is being ground too finely and then mixed and mixed for a long period of time. Either way, I have stopped by Tessaro’s twice now, and both times I have had a worse-than-average burger. I will not be returning for a third time.
